Species Quartz Var. Amethyst Class Silicates
Location Artigas, Uruguay
Size 9.0 x 7.5 x 9.2 cm
Price

SOLD

An absolutely breathtaking Amethyst "pineapple" stalactite from Uruguay. Quite simply, this is the finest Artigas cabinet specimen I have ever seen. The crystals, uniformly about 1.5 cm, show the famous very dark purple color but with spectacular magenta flashes, which are hard to photograph, but which are striking to the eye. Then there is the imposition of terminal purple on basal clear white, providing great contrast to round out this beautifully symmetrical specimen. There is a single chip on one of the crystals. This can be considered the "back" of the piece but, in any event, it is lost in the dazzling display. A real killer Amethyst!

Species Covellite Class Sulfides
Location Butte, Silverbow County, Montana
Size 7.9 x 7.1 x 4.7 cm
Price

SOLD

An exceptionally rare and historically significant old-time specimen of Covellite from Butte. This is essentially a solid crystalline mass of intergrown iridescent plates, showing brilliant electric blue color with accents of golden coatings of Chalcopyrite. Never a common mineral in collections, these specimens of massive crystals are hardly ever seen now. This piece is from the collection of Lawrence Conklin, Ex. Coll. Albert Sebela, and will be prized by those in search of a classic Covellite.

Species Tourmaline Class Silicates
Location Cruzeiro Mine, Minas Gerais, Brazil
Size 11.0 x 10.5 x 6.9 cm
Price

SOLD

A hefty specimen just covered with very gemmy Toumaline (Elbaite) of the most lovely pink color. In places the color is so intense that it brings to mind the famous Jonas specimens. The vast majority of crystals are pristine, but there is a rivulet of damage and/or dissolution that runs across the specimen (see the second photo enlargement). This actually adds some sparkle as the glassy interior of the crystals is revealed, but I have to consider it a negative and have reduced the price accordingly. Were it perfect, the quality is such that a considerably higher price could be asked. Overall the visual appeal is not affected to my eye and it remains a simply beautiful full cabinet specimen. The little book of Lepidolite at the bottom adds some interest and I have elected not to trim it, but it could be easily removed. A very rich and attractive piece!

Species Minrecordite on Dioptase Class Carbonates
Location Tsumeb, Namibia
Size 5.5 x 2.3 x 2.0 cm
Price

SOLD

An amazing specimen of the rare carbonate, Minrecordite, on Dioptase from the type locality of Tsumeb. These specimens are extrordinarily rare on the market and those few I have seen are not nearly so richly endowed. This large minature exhibits a great number of typically small (1 mm) white to colorless, very gemmy rhomohedra of Minrecordite on a background of equally impressive, gemmy green Dioptase. The sparkle is impressive and the color contrast breathtaking. A superlative combination of beauty and rarity and a must for the Tsumeb collector!

Species Indicolite / Smoky Quartz Class Silicates
Location Kunar Province, Afghanistan
Size 9.2 x 8.5 x 7.1
Price

SOLD

An exceptionally rich specimen of bright, gemmy blue-green Indicolite Tourmaline crystals nestled amongst a matrix of Smoky Quartz crystals. There is a fortuitous wash of an unknown pink material covering some of the Quartz faces and most of the Tourmaline terminations. From an aesthetic point of view this is a decided plus, imparting a very unusual pink/blue color contrast. There are 14 crystals of Indiclite (to 8cm), 8 of which are terminated. The large number of beautifully gemmy crystals and the unique colors presented qualifies this as a superlative specimen. Two of the terminations show some modest damage, or else this would be priced hundreds of dollars higher. A really stunning piece!

Species Beryl var. Morganite Class Silicates
Location Pech, Afghanistan
Size 8.4 x 4.1 x 4.8 cm
Price

SOLD

A lovely soft-pink very gemmy crystal of Morganite perched attractively against a matrix of reticular blades of Albite. Typical for this Cesium-rich variety of Beryl, the crystal has a classic sharp-edged tabular habit. What may appear to be a scratch at the base of the crystal is actually a crystalline overgrowth, likely a contact feature. It is well below the pink tabby and, to my eye, does not detract. A very desirable piece with understated sublime beauty.

Species Spessartine / Orthoclase Class Silicates
Location Shingus, Gilgit Disrict, Pakistan
Size 11.1 x 8.4 x 6.3 cm
Price

SOLD

A Garnet bonanza! I count 55 good-sized (to 1.3 cm) deep red crystals, almost Almandine in color. These are set attractively on a contrasting white matrix of Orthoclase with accenting flags of Muscovite. As usual the Spessartine is perfectly crystallized but the uniform coverage and relatively large size of both the crystals and the specimen makes this one highly desirable. The visual impact is dramatic!

Species Tourmaline Class Silicates
Location Momeik, Mogok, Burma (Myanmar)
Size 6.3 x 4.3 x 4.4 cm
Price

SOLD

From Bill Larsen comes one of the most uncommon of the tourmaline habits, the so-called "mushroom habit". This dusty-rose colored tourmaline from the classic locality in Burma exhibits this nicely. The bubbly reddish outer layer is wrapped around a black core which is striated in the manner of Schorl. It shows a beautiful color but is not at all gemmy and has suffered tragic damage on the back side, as shown in the second photo. This does not affect the display side, however, and in no way interferes with the appreciation of this very unusual habit. A must for any tourmaline collection.

Species Weloganite Class Carbonates
Location Francon Quarry, Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Size 7.6 x 5.5 x 3.0 cm

SOLD

A beautiful example of a rare species. This Strontium, Sodium, Zirconium carbonate is known from only one locality in the world that I am aware of, and this is an extraordinarily rich example with a pocket of dozens of crystals, all completely undamaged. The crystals are classically pseudohexagnal with a prominent flat pedion especially evident on the largest crystal (1.2 cm). The color ranges from white to the classic butterscotch yellow. Rarely available on the market, this is a great example of those occasional specimens which are both rare and beautiful in display.
